1% R&R May Not Be Enough

A 1% water pipes Rehabilitation & Replacement (R&R) rate, i.e., keeping pipes in service for 100 years old, seems like a reasonable objective to control a system’s Break Rate and Business Risk Exposure. However, because R&R comes at a cost of $1-5 million per mile, utilities may want to look at potential optimization.

In this article, we describe a case study involving a 2,855 mi-utility whose objective is to maintain the Break Rate below the 2020 value of 12 breaks/mi/yr. We were able to help that utility meet its objective and generate savings of up to $66 million per year, or $1.8 billion over the next 4 decades.
